On February 26, 1971, Erykah Badu was born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas. Because Badu was nurtured by her actress mother, Kolleen Maria Gipson, she was exposed to the arts early. When she was young, she started dancing and singing in plays at the Dallas Theater Center for her mother. Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts was her choice of Badu for high school. She focused on singing and dancing in the arts magnet school, where she did well. Out of three boys and girls, Erykah Badu was the eldest. After taking a degree from High School for the giving effect to and seeing Arts in Dallas, She went on to Major in dance and building used for the arts at Grambling State University in Louisiana.

Soon after, she started dating West Coast rapper Tracy Lynn Curry, and in 2004 she gave birth to their daughter, Puma Sabti Curry. In 2009, she brought forth her third youngster, a little girl named Mars Merkaba Thedford, fathered by Timothy Elpadaro Thedford. They stayed together for five years before heading out in a different direction.
